When using #ReportedSpeech, we use reporting verbs that follow certain patterns.
In the case of SAY, TELL, SUGGEST, and RECOMMEND, they have specific structures:
⚠️ When we use SAY, we say SOMETHING TO SOMEONE. It's not necessary to mention that someone, but if we do, we need to use TO and then a noun or an object pronoun.
⚠️ When we use TELL, we tell SOMEONE SOMETHING. We always have to mention that someone using an object pronoun or a noun. The same happens with the verb ADVISE.
⚠️ In the case of SUGGEST and RECOMMEND, we can use these patterns:
➡️ SUGGEST/ RECOMMEND + noun...
➡️ SUGGEST/ RECOMMEND + verb(ing)...
➡️ SUGGEST/ RECOMMEND + THAT + pronoun/noun + verb(base form)...
But what if we needed to say the opposite, let's say, using the negative form?
⚠️ With TELL and ADVISE, we use the NEGATIVE INFINITIVE:
👉🏼 The teacher TOLD US NOT TO LEAVE earlier.
⚠️ With SUGGEST and RECOMMEND, we use the NEGATIVE GERUND:
👉🏼 The doctor SUGGESTED/ RECOMMENDED NOT EATING junk food.
And the same happens to all the infinitives and gerunds that need to be turned into a negative form.
