HOPE AND WISH

In English we use two verbs that express a desire, but one refers to situations that are possible to happen in the present or future, while the other one refers to things that can't change, mostly about the past:

🟠 Hope:  To express something is very possible to happen.

🟠 Wish: To express something is impossible (not likely) to happen. (Never use present simple tense for the clause after "wish" ).

πŸ‘‰πŸ» She HOPES she CAN FIND a new house before the end of the year. (It's still possible for this to happen).

πŸ‘‰πŸ» He WISHES he HAD TOLD his wife the truth. (It's too late to change something about the past).

REPORTED SPEECH: Reporting advice

When using #ReportedSpeech, we use reporting verbs that follow certain patterns.

In the case of SAY, TELL, SUGGEST, and RECOMMEND, they have specific structures:

⚠️ When we use SAY, we say SOMETHING TO SOMEONE. It's not necessary to mention that someone, but if we do, we need to use TO and then a noun or an object pronoun.

⚠️ When we use TELL, we tell SOMEONE SOMETHING. We always have to mention that someone using an object pronoun or a noun. The same happens with the verb ADVISE.

⚠️ In the case of SUGGEST and RECOMMEND, we can use these patterns:

➡️ SUGGEST/ RECOMMEND + noun...
➡️ SUGGEST/ RECOMMEND + verb(ing)...
➡️ SUGGEST/ RECOMMEND + THAT + pronoun/noun + verb(base form)...

But what if we needed to say the opposite, let's say, using the negative form?

⚠️ With TELL and ADVISE, we use the NEGATIVE INFINITIVE:

πŸ‘‰πŸΌ The teacher TOLD US NOT TO LEAVE earlier.

⚠️ With SUGGEST and RECOMMEND, we use the NEGATIVE GERUND:

πŸ‘‰πŸΌ The doctor SUGGESTED/ RECOMMENDED NOT EATING junk food.

And the same happens to all the infinitives and gerunds that need to be turned into a negative form.
